If you care to look at the way human societies lived before the Industrial revolution you may wonder how we have gone so badly wrong. There was wisdom in the way societies lived. There was inter-dependence on each other and a sense of belonging.

We now segregate the family structure so that the young live a long way away [of course they can because they have a car and a freeway]...and for those at the end of life's span, we isolate them in appalling buildings which in turn create modern ghettoes.

We can however look to a future where we re-integrate the family in built environments that allow independence but share common needs. In early times we called these "villages" but whatever the word, the result is an inter-dependent environment which minimises embodied energy, minimises running energy and creates environments for people not transport systems.
